Figures

The durational performance installation stages the body as a moving figure between sculpture and dance, object and subject. Amidst the current collection and across all 4 levels of Museum der Kulturen Basel, the dancers question our perception of the familiar and the unknown, the personal and the foreign. Sensory perception and improvisation determine the composition of their bodies in close proximity to the audience, inviting an immediate encounter.
Directed by choreographer Mirjam Gurtner and working together over five weeks, an intercultural group of 14 amateur and professional dancers including participants with a refugee background, create a contemporary dance performance site specifically staged at Museum der Kulturen Basel.
